Group Programme

This is an online version of our group programme, you can pick up a paper copy at any of our meetings. For a quick listing of what's coming up, see the list of forthcoming events.

The programme is split into the following sections:

Welcome to the Leicester Hiking & Hostelling Group

We are an informal and friendly social walking group, comprising people of all ages and abilities. This programme details our weekend trips, day walks as well as evening social events such as theatre visits and meals out. We aim to have a regular spread of trips and events throughout the year, with plenty of variety to suit different tastes. We visit a wide variety of destinations throughout Britain and abroad, with events being organised by anyone within the Group

New members are always offered a warm welcome. We meet on the first Wednesday of every month from 8.00 pm onwards at The Western pub on Western Road, near to Narborough Road and the centre of Leicester. Meetings are generally informal, however, we do from time to time organise more formalised get togethers usually around a particular theme, speaker or social event.

The Group has recently produced a New Members Pack, a comprehensive introduction to the Group which answer many frequently asked questions. For those considering organising a hostelling weekend, we have also produced a straightforward guide to booking and organisation.

Before embarking on any our events, please note that all the activities listed in this programme are carried out at an individual's own risk.

If you wish, you can import this programme into Google Calendar.

Weekends and Longer Trips

The Group organises regular weekends away, mainly staying in youth hostels or similar accommodation. Many hostels offer breakfast and evening meals, as well as facilities for self caterers. The advance payment for a weekend covers overnight accommodation and a contribution towards transport costs. Any unused funds are refunded at the Treasurer's discretion. It is advisable to bring food and drink for a mid day packed lunch in addition to any other meals. Almost all weekends involve walking, so it is essential to bring adequate boots, rucksack, waterproofs and warm clothing.

Unless otherwise noted, all our weekend trips depart on Friday night and return on Sunday evening.

10th - 13th April: Easter weekend near Arundel: Slindon Bunkhouse

Spaces for 17 people in rooms of 10, 6 and 1 persons at this National Trust Bunkhouse just 4 miles from the historic town of Arundel. Ideal for walking or cycling with South Downs Way and Monarchs Way accessible from the site and the South coast nearby (Bognor Regis and Brighton a short drive away). There is also plenty of historic interest in Arundel, including a castle.
The venue has all mod cons: WiFi, a well stocked kitchen, BBQ in the garden etc, but, being a National Trust property only mattress protectors are provided so you will need to bring bedding and a pillow. Also there seems to be car parking at the site.
Please contact Any in the first instance to ensure that there is a place for you before contacting the treasurer to make any payments.

29th July - 2nd August: Summer in Snowdonia: 4 nights

4 nights in the heart of Snowdonia, arriving on Wednesday 29 July and departing on Sunday 2 August 2020, staying at Rhyd Ddu Outdoor Centre and Bunkhouse, a former village school, now run by the local community as a non-profit making enterprise.

Rhyd Ddu has superb views, being situated at the foot of Snowdon close to the Nantlle valley and only 3 miles north of Beddgelert. There are plenty of hard walks in the mountains and easy walks in the valleys. Cyclists are well catered for with quiet routes to the coast and ample safe storage for bikes at the bunkhouse.

We have to book the whole bunkhouse so will have sole use of all facilities. It sleeps 30 people in 6 bedrooms (1x12, 1x2 and 4x4 bedded rooms). There are comfortable mattresses and pillows but you will need to bring a sleeping bag and pillowcase (and perhaps a bottom sheet if you want to). There is a fully equipped kitchen, a dining room, a drying room, showers, toilets, outside picnic tables and free wi-fi. There is on-site parking for 8 cars. The bunkhouse has all been recently refurbished.

The village has a pub and tea room within a 2 minute walk. The pub serves meals. Rhyd Ddu station, on the Welsh Highland Line, is 200 metres away. Trains go to Caernarfon and Portmadog. There is also a good bus service. If the weather is hot there are nearby lakes for a possible swim.

The price of the weekend has been set for 16 people going. There will be a refund if more people go so let's fill the bunkhouse as much as we can. Contact John S to book your place and once confirmed send a £10 deposit to the treasurer.

Evening Events

Wednesday, 15th January: Wednesday Social: January 2020

Our first social of the new year. Please note that since the first Wednesday falls on New Year's Day and most folk would be otherwise engaged, it decided at the AGM not to hold a formal social event. So this is the only Wednesday social this year.

Meet up, swap yarns about daring exploits over the festive season, hide extra weight under loose clothing, or just have a drink or two with good friends.
