Group Programme

This is an online version of our group programme, you can pick up a paper copy at any of our meetings. For a quick listing of what's coming up, see the list of forthcoming events.

The programme is split into the following sections:

Welcome to the Leicester Hiking & Hostelling Group

We are an informal and friendly social walking group, comprising people of all ages and abilities. This programme details our weekend trips, day walks as well as evening social events such as theatre visits and meals out. We aim to have a regular spread of trips and events throughout the year, with plenty of variety to suit different tastes. We visit a wide variety of destinations throughout Britain and abroad, with events being organised by anyone within the Group

New members are always offered a warm welcome. We meet on the first Wednesday of every month from 8.00 pm onwards at The Western pub on Western Road, near to Narborough Road and the centre of Leicester. Meetings are generally informal, however, we do from time to time organise more formalised get togethers usually around a particular theme, speaker or social event.

The Group has recently produced a New Members Pack, a comprehensive introduction to the Group which answer many frequently asked questions. For those considering organising a hostelling weekend, we have also produced a straightforward guide to booking and organisation.

Before embarking on any our events, please note that all the activities listed in this programme are carried out at an individual's own risk.

If you wish, you can import this programme into Google Calendar.

Weekends and Longer Trips

The Group organises regular weekends away, mainly staying in youth hostels or similar accommodation. Many hostels offer breakfast and evening meals, as well as facilities for self caterers. The advance payment for a weekend covers overnight accommodation and a contribution towards transport costs. Any unused funds are refunded at the Treasurer's discretion. It is advisable to bring food and drink for a mid day packed lunch in addition to any other meals. Almost all weekends involve walking, so it is essential to bring adequate boots, rucksack, waterproofs and warm clothing.

Unless otherwise noted, all our weekend trips depart on Friday night and return on Sunday evening.

28th July - 1st August: Summer in Snowdonia: 4 nights

4 nights in the heart of Snowdonia, arriving on Wednesday 28 July and departing on Sunday 1 August 2021, staying at Rhyd Ddu Outdoor Centre and Bunkhouse, a former village school, now run by the local community as a non-profit making enterprise.

Rhyd Ddu has superb views, being situated at the foot of Snowdon close to the Nantlle valley and only 3 miles north of Beddgelert. There are plenty of hard walks in the mountains and easy walks in the valleys. Cyclists are well catered for with quiet routes to the coast and ample safe storage for bikes at the bunkhouse.

We have to book the whole bunkhouse so will have sole use of all facilities. It sleeps 30 people in 6 bedrooms (1x12, 1x2 and 4x4 bedded rooms). There are comfortable mattresses and pillows but you will need to bring a sleeping bag and pillowcase (and perhaps a bottom sheet if you want to). There is a fully equipped kitchen, a dining room, a drying room, showers, toilets, outside picnic tables and free wi-fi. There is on-site parking for 8 cars. The bunkhouse has all been recently refurbished.

The village has a pub and tea room within a 2 minute walk. The pub serves meals. Rhyd Ddu station, on the Welsh Highland Line, is 200 metres away. Trains go to Caernarfon and Portmadog. There is also a good bus service. If the weather is hot there are nearby lakes for a possible swim.

The price of the weekend has been set for 16 people going. There will be a refund if more people go so let's fill the bunkhouse as much as we can. Contact John S to book your place and once confirmed send a £10 deposit to the treasurer.

Saturday, 4th September: Victory Show, Cosby

The Victory Show, Foxlands Farm, Cosby LE9 1SG
Saturday 4 September

The Victory Show started as a one-off commemoration of VE day and is now entering its 11th year. It is intended to re-create the 1940's experience and commemorate the courage, hardships and endurance of our parents and grandparents during the days of WWII. The largest WWII re-enactment in the UK, you can witness a large-scale WWII battle and watch the vintage WWII aircraft take to the skies, engage in dog-fights and drop parachutists over the lines into 'enemy territory' (weather conditions permitting!).

As well as the battle and the air show, there will be vintage military vehicles and aircraft to look at as well as vintage static and working farm machinery. There will be military personnel from airmen to infantrymen from all the forces engaged in the war. They will be happy to answer your questions as they go about their daily business around the showground and in their respective battle camps.

There will also be miniature steam train rides, tank rides, Hinckley Model Boat Club and model remote controlled aircraft displays.

There are various food and drink outlets in the Showground and around 60 stalls, as well as 1940's music playing throughout the day in the marquee. Car parking is free of charge on site, but it is important to know that during the air show, access to the car parks is forbidden for safety reasons.

I went there in a past life (2018) and had a brilliant day out.

Because of covid restrictions and the need to control numbers, tickets must be bought in advance. If you would like to join this event, please contact Ellen. Payment must be made to Ellen before Friday evening, 14th May. Latecomers (or late payers) will have to arrange their own advance ticket purchases.

We will meet outside the Ticket Office at 11.30am on the Saturday and we could perhaps then have lunch together.

At the end of the day, those who want to can slake their thirsts after a hard day on the battlefields and airfields of the second World War at The Bulls Head pub in the village.
