Heart of England

Battlefields & Borderlands Way 2: Day Walk from Witherley - 5 miles
Tuesday, 28th December

Walk off the Christmas excesses and make room for the New Year ones :-)
For a 10am start meet at The Blue Lion, 8 Church Rd, Witherley, CV9 3NA
There is parking on Church Road and around the pub.
Please bring pack-up.

The first of the Battlefields & Borderlands Way walks in October
proved to be of a pioneering nature. Beating down brambles, and nettles
to clear some of the paths, ducking & weaving blue pipes and negotiating ploughed fields.
Great fun but exhausting. This walk has been reorganised and
pre-walked to avoid the worst problems.

A flattish, easy walk on footpaths, the Coventry Canal towpath and minor roads.
This time in the Warwickshire side of the border
and includes parts of the final leg of the B&BW.

Route: Track and footpaths to Woodford Bridge,
footpath towards Woodford Lodge,
minor road towards Hartshill Green then,
depending on progress either into Hartshill Green,
(Hartshill Hayes Park here is believed to have been a Druid site),
for lunchtime drink followed by minor road to Coventry Canal,
or straight on minor road to the canal,
then towpath & minor road into Mancetter followed by a footpath back to Witherley
where we can have a Christmas drink together in the Blue Lion.
If people are interested Boh could book a late lunch at the pub. Let him know.

Historical Note.
Mancetter, the Roman town of Manduessedum, is a strong candidate for the site of
the 61 AD Battle of Watling Street, the last stand of Boudica against the Romans.
With the Roman Army Southwest of the River Anker and Boudica's Northeast of it.
We'll visit the Church here which has a free exhibition about the battle,
some original Elizabethan 'Chain Books' and a monument to 2 Martyrs burned at the stake.

No need to let Boh now just turn up. The walk will start promptly at 10am.

Battlefields & Borderlands Way

A series of circular walks based on the 42 mile Battlefields & Borderlands Way.
The B&BW is a circular walk in the borders of Warwickshire and Leicestershire.
It is a reasonably flat, very scenic walk which takes in over 2000 years of
historical conflicts, invasions, religious differences, changing countryside ...
These include; the Battle of Watling Street, the Battle of Bosworth and
the Siege of Caldecote Hall.
A book with this title by Eddie Smallwood and Micheal Dix ISBN978-1-5272-8097-7 is available detailing the rich history of every section of the walk and the surrounding area.
