General Questions

In this section you'll find answers to general questions about the group and the way it operates.

Who are the Leicester Hiking & Hostelling Group?

The Leicester Hiking & Hostelling Group began its independent life In 1954, although its roots go back at least as far as 1934. We are a gradually expanding, friendly, informal group of people from all walks of life who enjoy all kinds of outdoor activities and a number of indoor ones too.

Until 2019, we were known as the "Leicester Local YHA Group." but changed the name to better reflect the range of activities we do. We still sometimes stay in YHA hostels, but in a lot of other places too!

What do you do?

We have a varied and full programme of events. Members of our Group have a primary Interest of walking in the countryside but we get up to all kinds of things, all over the place. About once a month we go away for the weekend and stay in a Youth Hostel or bunk house. These trips are usually in Great Britain but we do travel abroad sometimes. On weekends that people are not away, we sometimes have a local walk. During the week we tend to relax over a pint and a meal or watch a play. Our Social events are as varied as anybody's suggestions.

Where do you meet?

We meet on the first and third Wednesdays of every month at the Western pub on Western Road, near to Bede Park and De Montfort Uuniversity (see map below). The meetings are very informal: Just a chat over a pint and a chance to sign up for events you want to take part in. Not all our events are in the programme so it is a good idea to come along on a Wednesday so you can to find out what you are missing. There are usually a number of people there by 9:00pm. You can just turn up and, if you are unsure who we are, ask the bar staff.
